Chapter 20

The swing on the huge oak tree in the middle of the Woodland Glen cemetery stopped moving, but the swing seat hovered in the air.

Ari stood motionless. “Krista? You here?”

The young ghost had not made herself visible yet. The wind whistled and time seemed to falter. Then gravity took the swing, and the dead leaves rustled with the rhythm of someone walking.

Arms folded over her dark dress. The young ghost stamped her foot. “Where have you been? Didn't you get my message?”

“No. What're you talking about?"

"I told Remy to tell you," Krista said.

Ari shook her head. "I haven't seen him for a few days."

"No, no, no," Krista said through her hands as she paced away. "She must have him too."

"Who must have him? Krista talk to me." Ari followed behind the girl.

“There have been some strange things going on out here.”

"Okay, I'm here now. You know you can tell me."

“That's just it. I can’t.” Krista walked away kicking at a rock. Her Mary Janes ghosted right through it.

The young ghost moved around angrily. Ari could tell she wanted to say something, but couldn't. “Is it a secret?” Ari clasped her hands together. “I can keep a secret.”

"Kinda. Oh—" Krista jumped around. "This part’s no secret. Your friend has been hanging out with a bad witch."

“Who? Remy? What witch?”

Krista opened her mouth, but then it snapped shut.

Was her mother up to something? Maybe that’s why she wants to merge with the New Orleans clan. She’d heard stories about some of their witches' magic. Darker than anything she could dream of. Right up Erissa’s alley.

“You want to tell me but can’t. Am I close?”

Krista tapped her nose.

A spell, then. Not many witches could control ghosts. A necromancer could, but she didn’t know any of those. “Did the bad witch do this to all the ghosts?”

Krista nodded. “But we can talk about anything else. The weather, how busy Halloween's going to be around here.”

Ari nodded in agreement, cemeteries were always—. She gasped when she got what the girl was really saying.

Krista threw her hands up. “And you’re supposed to be the adult. I wished you would have visited sooner.” Krista waved at her sealed lips.

“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again. Maybe I should visit you every night.”

Krista shook her head. “Not safe for anyone around here. Especially if ghosts are going to—” Her mouth sealed up. She stomped around, no doubt cursing up a storm, slapping her sealed lips.

The entire scene about broke Ari’s heart. “Calm down.”

She got in the path of the angry ghost and braced herself. Ghosts couldn't possess her. Instead of passing through her, Ari's body responded like a brick wall. Krista bumped into her chest and they both fell on their butts.

“What the hay, Ari?”

If the little girl could breathe, she might have passed out she was so worked up. “I don’t like seeing you like that. We won’t talk about stuff you can’t talk about.”

Krista stood up, straightened her dress with a firm shake, then went back to her swing.
